January 2nd, 2009: More STREET FIGHTER Rumblings

Wow. Lots of STREET FIGHTER fans out there! It used to be I would receive a few e-mails per week to talk about PIRATE COVE but lately all I've been getting are questions about STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN-LI! Well, it should come as no surprise that I'm not allowed to speak freely about the film or give out detailed information, but I CAN confirm the following:

1. The trailer that has been showing up on Japanese sites was originally created by Fox, then dubbed & slightly altered for Japanese audiences. When Fox gets the trailer online and into domestic theatres, this is pretty much what you'll be seeing.

2. The movie is around 97 minutes long and rated PG-13. We HAD an R up until a few weeks ago, but FOX wanted a PG-13 release so we cut out a few moments of brutality. I expect there will be an unrated version available on DVD when that time comes.

3. For those of you who were concerned, no, Taboo does not sing in the film.

4. Since the poster has been spotted in theatres, I guess it's OK for me to post one! Enjoy!

And for those of you who come to this blog to read about PIRATE COVE, I'll see you on Monday with the next installment of Episode XXXVI: $1,984!

The Japanese trailer is baiscally the official trailer?!

Wow, I'm seriously disappointed. I was hoping for actual dialog and more of a story telling like trailer, not just visuals of fights. Why dumb it down so much?

And that poster is boring and again disappointing.

As I said already in the other blog, FOX is dropping the ball on this film BAD.

It almost seems like they just don't care and that's disheartening since I really want to see this film be successful, but sadly it seems thus far you guys aren't doing a very appealing job with this film.

If this movie does awful in the boxoffice, take a good hard look at how it was promoted.

I'll be sad to see a good film go to waste due to a poorly ran campaign. :(

When exactly is FOX planning on giving us a domestic trailer? I was hoping for one as far back as October; it's already 2009, the movie's out in less than two months. What the hell are they waiting for?

That truly is a terrible poster

Hey Joe, do you realize how poorly Fox is treating this movie? It comes out in less than 2 months and there is no domestic trailer, no website, and a terrible looking poster. Most people don't even know this movie is coming out. And the people that DO know it's coming out, know very little about it. You keep saying you can't give out a lot of information. Why not? Why is Fox keeping us in the dark? We still know nothing about Bison in this movie and what his goals are. The plot of the movie is still largely a mystery. All we know is, Chun Li is out for revenge.

Just pass it on to Fox that they have nobody to blame but themselves if this movie bombs. Tell them not to blame it on the film makers.

You can't fill theaters if nobody knows anything about your movie.

Yeah, honestly. Fox is doing a horrible job promoting this movie. How does Japan get the trailer out before us?

USA doesn't even know about The Legend of Chun-Li. The trailer shows nothing but action. No storyline, character introductions, or anything. Just a bunch of bad wire stunt actions.

Is Fox really trying to follow behind Dragonball?

I think there's potential in this Street Fighter movie but FOX is not giving it a chance whatsoever and it comes out in almost two months!

Who was the idiot that thought including Balrog's rocket launcher in the poster was a good idea instead of a boxing glove or even a fist? You might as well name him "Rocket launcher man" instead of Balrog.

I mean, maybe he does fight with his fists in the movie, but that is not the way he is being marketed. And fans are pissed. The only thing Barog-related to him is he is black.

And there is nothing about Bison in that trailer that makes anybody think he's Bison. He's just a guy in a suit. Vega looks like the main bad guy in the trailer because he's at least got something interesting about him with the mask and the claw. But you idiots thought Bison would look silly in a military uniform and hat. And now you'll have hell to pay when the fans rip this movie apart.

And don't you know that Chun Li pretty much ALWAYS keeps her hair in buns? And where are her bangs?

How is a guy with a beard in a suit doing kung fu any less silly than a guy wearing a captain's hat?

That is NOT the Bison we know and love. That is a guy in a suit. They totally fucked up Bison. The 1994 Bison is way better. At least he looks the part.

Can you explain to me how any of those characters, besides Vega, related to the characters in the game on that poster? Please explain it to me.

What is so "Chun Li" about Kristin on that poster? What is so "Bison" about Neal in the poster? Do you see what I'm getting at? This poster FAILS because all we get are faces. You can't even see Chun Li's trademark buns! She still looks like Lana Lang in this poster!

Without Vega, how in the hell does this poster relate to Street Fighter???

For the love of God, tell Fox to make a new one and have a guy who knows what the fuck he's doing to make it.

This seems to be another case of Hollywood people thinking they know better when they DON'T!

Thinking it wouldn't be realistic enough for the characters to actually look how they look in the games.

What would have happened if Chris Nolan had said "A guy in a bat costume would be silly. We'll just dress him in black pants and a black jacket. That'd be better"?

That's what you did to Bison. You killed him.

Seriously, if you weren't going to do it right, why do it at all?

Super Mario Bros is supposed to be bright and cartoony. But they made that movie dark and they turned Bowser into a normal human being. And you know what happened with that? IT BOMBED!

So yeah, you people think you know sooo much. You know how to make BOMBS is what you know how to do.

I think Fox sucks because there still is no trailer for this movie and since there isn't I doubt any money will be made. I think the punishment for Fox would be a slap in the face for not promoting this movie I will not waste money to see this movie if I get no damn trailer beforehand so thank you Fox for being frigging idiots! And you wonder why movies bomb, why don't you look in the mirror if you want someone to blame!

Where's the goddamn english trailer????

At 12:33 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Fanbabies.

At 12:39 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Holy cow... So, the American trailer will basically be that piece of crap shown in Japan? That is just very disappointing. No dialog? Just .5-second clips of kicks and punches? Lame.

That poster is also very uninspiring and very bland. This poster is so generic-looking and looks like something a design student did who probably got a C+ on it. The "Street Fighter" logo looks so amateurish and has really boring-looking typography. Also, why am I seeing the silhouettes of two men when Chun-Li is the star and should be at least one of those silhouettes?

I feel disgusted with FOX for the extreme lack of promotion for this movie. It's already January and the movie comes out next month and there's absolutely no hype whatsoever attached to it. There is a massive audience for this movie but FOX isn't doing anything to reach out to them. I can't believe FOX didn't at least try to reach out to internet communities (Capcom-Unity, Shoryuken.com, deviantArt, etc.) to help promote this.

If this movie bombs in the theaters, the Street Fighter and video game community (and myself) would love to know who exactly was behind the extreme lack of promo and why they chose to not do anything. It's the least we deserve as Street Fighter fans.

If you're going to put something out for the entire world to see, do it right. Be resourceful and don't be afraid to ask for help.

Hey, now - let's keep the "you" out of this. ;) Like I said, I work in post. By the time the film comes my way, all the creative decisions have already been made. I'm just trying to help y'all out with a little info is all. Take it or leave it. I do admit, I wish we could have seen some more promotion of the film by this point, but Fox has their plan so all I can do is sit back & see what it is. Maybe you'll like the movie in the long run, maybe you won't... but bear in mind that everyone was screaming bloody murder about the costumes in "X-Men" when they first saw 'em and by the end of that film, no one seemed to care anymore. If I can get you some more info, I will, but no more personal attacks, please.

The X-Men costumes were black leather, but Storm still had her white hair and cape, Wolverine still had his trademark hair and claws, and Cyclops had his visor. They were all still recognizable to the fans.

Bryan Singer could have said "Wolverine's sideburns would look silly." Or "Magneto's helmet wouldn't work on screen." But he didn't. They characters appearances were changed, but not to the point where they don't bare any resemblance to the characters.

People are taking their frustrations out on you because there is no one else to do it to.

You should check out the IMDB boards for this movie. A fan made a poster that is a million times better than the one Fox is using.

Well, I guess it's pretty obvious that the marketing isn't being recieved that well. But I concur, that is not your fault. Alot of these seem to be directed at Fox, or Hyde park ( I don't really know who is responsible for the marketing). I for one am pretty stoked about the movie. I heard dion lam was a 2nd unit director on this one, so that is something I will be watching for!:)

At 2:11 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jow, why are FOX being so slow with this film? Do they NOT believe in it? Is that what it is? Because at this point it makes no sense that there isn't an official site or domestic trailer to it! Does Hyde Park have ANY say in any of what's happening with this film?

At 4:18 PM, Blogger Jow! said...

Let's see what I can answer without irritating anyone involved with the making or distribution of the film...

If you don't like the actual movie; if you don't like the way the characters look, you don't like the action, don't like the choice of font in the opening credits; then your beef is with Capcom and Hyde Park. Hyde Park and Capcom produced the film, chose the writer, chose the director, chose the actors, approved the costume designs, etc.

If you don't like the way the picture is being publicized (the poster, the trailer, the TV commercials, etc,) then you'd want to speak to Fox.

Either way, I will absolutely be passing on the comments to my higher-ups so they can see what the fan base thinks of the choices thus far. I love the fact so many people have been posting not only their complaints, but WHY they are complaining. It shows that you guys aren't a bunch of whining fanboys, but people who know what they want AND know how they would fix it if they could.

I mentioned the following to one of the above posters and I feel it applies to all of the comments: I've been there. I know how you feel. I was extremely disappointed by the second and third Matrix movies. I hated the design for the Green Goblin in the first Spider-Man movie. I could barely watch the two Fantastic Four movies and the fifth Harry Potter movie made me want to leave the theatre. It's tough to see something you love get changed into something that doesn't resemble the movie you had in your mind.

But for every screwup "Hollywood" makes, we get an Iron Man. We get a Lord of the Rings Trilogy. We get The Dark Knight.

And, despite the fact Iron Man was well-reviewed and did great at the box office, there were a lot of people who DIDN'T like it. Everyone's got an opinion and none are wrong.

YOU know the Street Fighter movie is coming out. And when you see it, you will either like it or you won't. Don't worry about what anyone else thinks. But for better or worse, MAKE YOUR VOICES HEARD. Post up a storm at IMDB. Give your reviews at Ain't It Cool News. Because when "Hollywood" hears what you like, they will repeat the effort and when they hear what you DON'T like, hopefully they will try to avoid it in the future.

And to answer that last question, I DON'T KNOW why Fox is being so slow with getting you guys the trailer. I would have liked to have seen a website and trailer by now, too, but it's their marketing campaign and I just gotta hope that when they start advertising, they advertise and market the HELL out of it!

Although I assume it's too late to revise the trailer, I think it would've been far better with much more dialog and exposition. It seemed like it had too much action, which is crazy, considering that it's a trailer for an action movie.

hi guys well to me this new street fighter movie was going to fail before it was made cause this was handle by FOX, and we know FOX dont know how to make good comics and games into live action film good.

heres a list of films that FOX has done and screw up big time.

- Wing Commander
- X-Men: The Last Stand
- Alien vs. Predator
- Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem
- Hitman
- Fantastic Four 1 and 2
- Daredevil
- Elektra
- Max Payne

also the director for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li Andrzej Bartkowiak aint a good director cause he messed up Doom live action movie.

To the guy who said Fox doesn't make goo comic or game movies, umm...he listed X-Men 3 but not 1 or 2. Hmm...wonder why. Maybe because it wouldn't support his claim?

At 3:10 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

X-men 1 and 2 had it faults too but it was alrite still not the best X-Men 3 was crap tho
